SHYC - 31st Scituate Junior Regatta Recap
August 11, 2018
The 2018 Scituate Junior Regatta is behind us. We hosted 180 sailors, which were made up of 41: 420's & 98 Opti's. There were even a few SHYC prams that rounded out the opti green fleet. It was a tough start to Monday as we all waited for the breeze to come in but it eventually did. Between Monday afternoon and a full day of sailing on Tuesday, our race committee's managed to get off 20 races across the 3 lines. Nice work RC and thank you to all of the on-water support people who showed up, with or without a boat, to make sure our sailors stayed safe and had fun. Between the medical boat, our floating doctors & the ones on land, the support from South Shore Hospital and the number of safety boats that show up, we definitely have the safest regatta around.
We had a lot of guidance from veteran regatta volunteers & organizers, as well as a great showing from some newbies. Maureen and the SHYC staff were awesome as always, providing support every step of the way. For all the amazing on-land people, thank you for your hard work in some very tough conditions. It was a very HOT 2-3 days. That didn't slow you down and everything went off without a hitch. From the registration, sailors welcome, parking lot duty to the breakfast crew, lunch brigade, cookout & pizza party staff and cocktail party crew, a big thanks to all of you. A special shout out to our green shirt Junior Instructors, led by Dr. Mike, who worked very hard carrying and wheeling Opti after Opti, from the driveway to the dock. I think you got in your 10,000 steps. We provided housing for 18 which included a couple of chaperones and a coach. Thank you again to those families that opened their homes to our guests. Those sailors and families were very grateful.
Thank you to all of those who volunteered in any way and thank you to the rest of the membership for being gracious hosts of this great regatta each year. It is a big undertaking for our club, and it wouldn't be possible without all of you.
Luckily, we do have an incredible club and membership and the support of the Satuit Boat Club and the Town of Scituate. Much appreciated, and these efforts have not gone unnoticed. On behalf of myself, Liz and the Sailing Committee, thank you again. See you at SJR 32. (or SRJ if you read the t-shirt) 😊
